Drama
At Holy Trinity School we consider drama an important means of learning across the curriculum. We believe that drama enables students to acquire social and life skills that will benefit them long after they have left school and entered the adult world. Drama encourages self-confidence, teaches students the ability to listen more actively and develops skills that enable students to relate more readily to others. It is also an invaluable means of developing language skills, encouraging positive social interaction, increasing physical control, stimulating imaginations, and teaching children how to listen and respond appropriately.
In the Infants department, drama is structured around the activities which are already a part of young children’s development: action rhymes and songs; follow-the-leader games; structured play and role play; circle games; whole group mime and movement activities.
In the Primary, drama becomes an important part of the English curriculum. A simple role play can cover many aspects of the curriculum, including; speaking and listening skills, reading and viewing and writing.
The Secondary continues the Drama curriculum with compulsory learning for Year 8 and then as an elective in Years 9 and 10. Elective students are immersed in the practical and technical aspects of theatre on a regular basis. Students become confident in make-up artistry, lighting, directing and producing, film making and peformance. Students attend at least one stage performance a year with Year 10 students being offered the opportunity to participate in the annual Drama excursion to Sydney. Here the students attend performances and workshops at both NIDA and Sydney Theatre Company while also experiencing the magic of a live performance at the Capitol Theatre. In past years our students have had the opportunity to attend a number of great musicals such as “The Lion King” and “ Man of La Mancha” and were even lucky enough to spend time with Anthony Warlow!
Drama is regularly taken out of the classroom context with students presenting performances.
Holy Trinity stages a major musical production every three years. Our last musical production “Annie”, involved students from Year 3 to Year 10, and provided all those involved with wonderful experiences, wonderful memories,
Drama at Holy Trinity School is about instilling the desire to communicate through enactment. In fact it is much more than what is on the stage! It includes what occurs behind the stage, behind the mask and behind the actors dialogue.
